Happy 46th Anniversary of the Beatles’ first Ed Sullivan show!
Time flies, doesn't it? I remember staying up late and curling up in front of the television just to catch a grainy glimpse of the faces of Ringo, George, John, and Paul. It's as if it was, well, yesterday.
Yes, February 9th, 1964 was the first day America was officially introduced to the Beatles. And while we're either one year gone or four years away from a more "official" milestone, 46 years is as good an excuse as any to think about the Beatles. I mentioned a few weeks back during the Classic Rock mixtape that I listened to a lot of the Beatles growing up. Specifically, I listened to a lot of early Beatles. My mom owned most all their records, save one or two, but I don't remember listening to much past Revolver until I was older. So I have a soft spot for the first few albums. Back when every song was about girls, basically.
I was going to ask for your favourite Beatles song, but that's hard enough for me to pick. So, what Beatles songs might make it into your top three? Or five, or ten, or...whatever. For the purposes of keeping it brief, I picked three songs to represent my love of the Beatles:
1. Things We Said Today
2. I'll Follow The Sun
3. You Never Give Me Your Money
Are they my top three? Possibly. Did I just pick three songs that I love and happened to be thinking about at the time? Probably. But this is hard, so I'll offer a bonus question: What's your favourite Beatles album? Do you lean towards the early to mid sixties, or the late sixties/early seventies? Does the sheer breadth of The White Album make it an obvious choice? Does Side B of Abbey Road beat all else for you? Or are you one of the few (or many? They must be out there) who believe that the Beatles reached their creative peak with 1963's Please Please Me and never again matched it?
Personally, I like A Hard Day's Night. There's hardly a dud on it, and Side 2 is, in my opinion, golden.
So post under this blog with your favourite songs/ album by the Fabulous Four. You can really learn a lot about a person from their favourite Beatles song.
Talk of early Beatles also leads nicely into this week's episode of The Mixtape. On Thursday night at 9pm, I'll unveil the pre-Valentine's tape. It promises to be the most romantic show yet.
Talk to you then,
Ian
ps. A look into the future.

Favourite Beatles? That’s tough. I definately lean opposite to you. The best Beatles occured after Rubber Soul in my opinion. Once they learned how to use the studio as an instrument, they became a whole new band. Not only that, post 1965 Lennon/McCartney song writing was so much deeper and not the same old “boy meets girl, boy girl fall in love” style of writing. That’s not to say those songs don’t have their spot in music history.
But as for my Beatles faves – Revolver or Abbey Road is a coin toss each day for my favourite album. And then take your pick for what I think is their best song – I Saw Her Standing There, Tomorrow Never Knows, She Said She Said, Oh Darling, I Want You (She’s So Heavy), I’m So Tired, Get Back…This list could be much longer, but I’ll stop there. Great topic!
