It seems to me artist like lil' wayne and 50 cent seem to split rap fans down the middle. Though there's no doubt they brought something new to the table and changed the industry, is it for better or worse? Personally I like lil' wayne, he is definitely a hard worker and constantly making new tracks. He puts out a lot of awful music, but he makes so much of it that good tracks surface every once in a while.
Today on my show I asked whether you think Lil' Wayne is the great free styler he claims to be. I've seen him claim that he never writes anything down, and that he free styles many of the tracks that go right on his albums. Joining the ranks of other rap legends like biggie. But I've also heard rumours that he gets other rappers on young money to write for him. Someone even told me that drake wrote a lot of the rhymes on 'tha charter 3'. What do you guys think?

If you’re looking at straight up content, in terms of depth and substance, then yeah, he’s not so great. And no, you shouldn’t raise your children to “Tha Carter III”, unless you want them to be insane and murderous, lol.
However, giving him the benefit of the doubt that he is in fact freestyling, his rhyme schemes, and his ability to go for like entire song lengths, he’s got some serious skill. Also, looking at it in terms of literary devices, his ability to use metaphors, references, and punchlines, is dope.
But yeah, Old School wasn’t all that wholesome, either. NaS is a great artist, but again, I wouldn’t let my kids listen to all of his music. NaS also isn’t as mainstream as Lil Wayne, either. they’re almost two different genres. You can’t classify all rap into one genre, just like you can’t do that for any other genre. What if I compared Screamo to mainstream rock ? It wouldn’t make sense.
Personally I believe that Lil’ Wayne isn’t as legendary as he appears to be. I’ll be honest Rap, in general, has been going uphill by popularity but downwards in the actual meaning of Rap. Old school Rap artists (Tupac, Run DMC, Notorious Big, etc) was the way to actually go because they at least made the lyrics in rap rhyme so that it actually MEANT something but Rap in the present is all about image and advertising because that’s how a song can potentially become big. Anyways, this is a whole other argument so let’s focus on the real deal here.
I can so believe that talented artists like Drake would have written most if not all of his music. Lil’ Wayne has no talent and I’m ashamed to hear artists that praise his work in the music field in accordance to Rap. All it is in his music is sex, money, bling, show-off; the lifestyle of your typical egotistical bitch if you ask me. I personally feel that the actual credit of good Rap should be given to artists like Nas because at least they write good rhymes and actually make you think (to a certain extent) about something meaningful instead of the stereotypical image that Rap seems to be so popular in producing.
But hey, don’t take my word for it. I’m just a Rock music fan (don’t even get me started on Lil’ Wayne’s “Rebirth” album)
