That Canadian Show: The Punk Edition!
Hey all!
Last week was our punk/hardcore/metalcore, whatever you want to call it week! Angry Canadian music, because who says Canadians can't get angry! We looked at a bunch of classic pioneering Canadian punk bands like D.O.A. who are credited as being one of the first bands to start the Hardcore Punk genre. They are mentioned in the same breath as punk legends like the Bad Brains, Black Flag, and Minor Threat. We also heard from the legendary punk band Teenage Head, why do I refer to them as legendary? If my research serves correct they are the only band in Canadian history to evoke a riot. The riot occurred on June 2 1980 at Ontario Place (at the Forum, which is now the Molson Ampitheatre) and shut down Lakeshore boulevard. Read more about it HERE! The event was so dramatic that it caused Ontario place to completely ban any "heavy" music for future years.
We also heard from many modern day punk acts, keeping and carrying on the punk traditions. The Flatliners, the Saint Catherines, and Hostage Life were all played. They certainly all are superb punk acts. I highly recommend Hostage life, check out their video for "This song was written by a committee" here! Also be sure to check out the Underground Operations record label, which has brought us great punk acts like Closet Monster, Hostage Life, and bombs over providence.
Also, found a peice of nostalgia when doing research for the show. I stumbled upon an interview between George Strombolopolous, and a very young Rody Walker of protest the hero. Check that out HERE!
Next week we have our second "Classic Canadian Album" make sure to tune into Radio Laurier at 3 on Tuesday to find out who it is!

Your weekly Canadian music update!
Yo, Hello, Hooray,
Travis here from THAT CANADIAN SHOW! Instead of a theme on this past Tuesdays show I opted for a more eclectic collection of great Canadian music. We started off the show with "poets" by the Tragically Hip, a classic Canadian track from a cliche Canadian band. Then I gave you guys a taste of the new Down With Webster record entitled Time to Win Vol. 2. The guys stated that they've grown up a bunch since Time to Win Vol 1 and the music reflects that, the band even said that most of the songs were written very closely to the recording process. It does reflect a growing up for the guys, no more baggy pants, bright colours and koala backpacks for DWW. Although, with the magic of the internet I was able to find the official video for "Miracle Mile" off of their Self-Titled EP. Get a blast from the past with some old school DWW HERE!
We also had a listener request for a band called LIMBLIFTER and their track Ariel Vs. Lotus. If this sounded familiar to you, you aren't alone! Limblifter is a side project from the band Age of Electric, a band from the 90's. You have definitely heard of them before, but just in case you haven't check out their most recognizable track "Remote Control". I guarantee you'll recognize it. This got me motivated, so in the future look out for an all 90's edition of That Canadian Show, because let's face it, 90's rock is the best. ever.
We also heard a track from a band called "Duchess Says", go and check them out if you're into semi-industrial/new wave/grunge music with a female singer. They describe themselves as "Moog Rock" which in itself warrants a listen. Take a gander at Annie-Cluade, the lead singer for Duchess Says performing "Year of the Ox" with Fucked Up here. Prepare yourself for 4 guitar players, a string section, two singers, and copious amounts of what appears to be coloured masking tape.
Also, put on those thinking caps and ponder YOUR favourite Canadian album release of 2011! The year is wrapping up, who's at the top of your list?
That's all until next week! Want to make requests? Want to have your band played on the show? tweet me! @thecanadianshow

Recap of the past two weeks!
First and foremost I do apologize for my lack of presence in the Radio Laurier Blog-o-sphere as of late.
The past two weeks have not had themes but two weeks ago we heard the first selection in our "Canadian Classic Albums" collection! Instead of picking something cliche like "2112" by Rush or "Fully Completely" by The Tragically Hip, we chose something..odd....
The first Classic Canadian Album was "Trainwreck" by Burlington natives Boys Night Out! Trainwreck is a concept album, which tells the touching story of a man who loses his mind, murders his wife in his sleep, goes to the doctor, convinces the doctor he's alright to go back into mainstream society, cuts his hands off so he won't ever kill again, and then resolves to end his life so he can be with his wife again. Weird eh? I played a selection of tracks from the record, check out "Medicating" here
Last week I mentioned the boys from Protest the Hero have a new video out for their track "Hair-Trigger" off of their most recent record entitled "Scurrilous". It is fairly silly, even for Protest the Hero standards, this coming from a band who dressed up like the village people and had a choreographed dance number in one of their videos. So, check out "Hair-Trigger" if you dare, and yes, Jada Kelly does make an appearance in the video to sing a heartfelt duet with Rody.
That's all for now! Don't forget to tune into Radio Laurier this coming Tuesday at 3pm to get your daily dose of great Canadian Music. Also, I'm now on twitter, @thecanadianshow and I promise I'll use it more often, once I get some twitter lessons..

That Canadian Blog!
Hey!
Once again THAT CANADIAN SHOW returns to Radio Laurier! Third year doing the show, and I'm super stoked for this upcoming year! I've got lots of great plans for the show and lots of great music for all of you! If you're new to the show That Canadian Show airs on Tuesdays from 3-5 and plays music from Canada ONLY! If you missed the past couple of weeks; fear not!
The first week was just an introduction to the show, a random eclectic collection of all the great music you should expect to hear throughout the year. We featured some great new music from Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker off of their "Approved" EP, some classic tracks from the Tragically Hip and Rush, and we said goodbye to a band that has been with us for the past 10 years, which of course was Alexisonfire.
The second week was our very first THEME WEEK! We focused on all the new music that has come out or is coming out in next few months! We celebrated the release of LIGHTS second album entitled SIBERIA. We also focused on bands like Hey Ocean, The Arkells and Duchess Says, who all have new music coming out in the near future!
That's all for now! Listen to Radio Laurier next Tuesday from 3-5 to catch That Canadian Show! What will be the theme!? You'll have to listen to find out!

Last week (March 24th) was our french week! We had a special guest DJ (Brigette from Operation Breakthrough) to pronounce the names of some bands. We heard bands like La petite rose, Duchess Says (CHECK THAT BAND OUT!), and DJ Champion. The Week before that was ST Pattys day, which I hope you all enjoyed, but unfortunately, my pre-recorded show didn't play, but it had lots of great Canadian Irish music, I assure you....
But, heres some cool links...

First off, sorry for the lack of blog-ness for the past couple weeks
Hope you all enjoyed your reading weeks.
The sixth show, was the CASBY week, Canadian Artists Selected By You! A Show dedicated to the radio station "The Edge" and their yearly music awards. We saw artists like Men Without Hats (FINALLY!), Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (Check them out, and if you have a chance to see them live DO IT, you won't regret it! and bands like Martha and the Muffins too!
The seventh show this week was the start of something somewhat different, instead of genre/theme based shows we switched over to a more regional approach to the show. This week we focused on the prairie provinces, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We heard bands like Bachman Turner Overdrive, Our Mercury, and a band called Birds are dinosaurs, check them out, instrumental progressive, its really cool!
