May 20th marked the iTunes release date of Moneen’s “Live from the Mod Club”.  We last caught up with the band during the 2007 on-campus O-Week party.  The night marked Moneen’s third visit to Laurier; a place they admitted they enjoy visiting because of all the excited frosh and “different coloured [orientation week] t-shirts”.  The band met with Radio Laurier to share their touring experiences, and to discuss their upcoming releases.

Moneen started out playing in Brampton, and Mississauga; and area that has produced several other successful Canadian bands including the Junction, Billy Talent, MSTRKRFT, and Meligrove Band.  They told us that Moneen was actually a French student who was living with one of their girlfriends in university when they decided to name the band after her.  They described their hometown music scene as “supportive”, explaining how artists often overlapped to perform together at local venues.  While the band modestly admitted to playing/attending shows with roughly fifteen people in the audience, within a few years everything had changed.  Moneen quickly gained recognition with their album “Are We Really Happy with Who We Are Right Now?” back in 2003.  Since then, they’ve evolved releasing experimental side-project Switcheroo in 2005 (a joint project with their close friends, Alexisonfire), and their album Red Tree in 2006.

Their newest projects will not disappoint.  Along with the live recording from the MOD club, the band released their long-awaited DVD “it all started with a red stripe” on May 13th.  The band described the MOD club as their favourite venue to play in Toronto because of its atmosphere.  “They had cool lighting [and sound] to make us look way cooler than we are” they joked.  The band also shared their feelings about playing for a hometown audience expressing how nice it was to play their first headlining show in Toronto since the release of their new album.  Fans can expect to hear raw and energetic versions of their favorite Moneen tunes on the live recording which features nine tracks from their dynamic MOD club performance.  The recording has an operatic sound met with loud guitar rifts, and strong, melodramatic vocals.  Their DVD includes an entire live show, as well as unreleased content, and music videos.  The DVD will also include a documentary about the band which they described to us as a “super-secret” project that would have footage from live performances at the MOD club, and the Opera House, as well as clips from events that took place on tour.

Moneen recently announced that they would be playing with Jimmy Eat World on July 4th in Toronto at the Sound Academy.  When asked if they plan on relaxing anytime soon the band responded by saying “we’re lasting [awhile]…we’re like the energizer bunny…we just keep going, and going”.
