Connect the Crates
Connect the Crates
Hosted by MisterE, every Monday at 8pm
Connect the Crates’ aim is to expose listeners to the sources used to construct some
of the best beats to grace the wonderful world of rap music. Rap music is largely
informed by previously existing music. When pioneering DJs began creating what is
now known as rap in the late 1970s, their only musical tool was existing songs. DJs
would mash together various parts of various records to create something entirely
new. On Connect the Crates, we will be exploring the music that has been sampled
by rap artists throughout history. Expect to hear everything from Public Enemy to
Jay-Z, from James Brown to Van Halen.
Connect the Crates will be hosted/DJ’d by local rap artist/Laurier student,
Mike Sammut aka MisterE. MisterE is part of the Canadian collective known as
Backburner and has released two solo albums. His latest album, ‘Dusting For
Prints’ attained the #6 position on Canada’s national college radio hip-hop charts
and has garnered attention internationally. MisterE has also leant his production
efforts to several other rap artists, including a production credit on More or Les’
album, ‘Brunch With a Vengeance,’ which was named by Exclaim! magazine as one
of the 10 best rap albums of 2010. Tune in every Monday at 8pm to hear MisterE
Connect the Crates.
