The Mixtape is headin’ down into the mystery below.

Author: The Mixtape
Just tonight I pulled up my good friend Joe on Facebook chat, and so I type, "give me a mixtape idea". He paused, but in less than a minute answered, "The Grim Reaper Mixtape. Songs about death and dying that aren't total downers". "Good luck," he added, and then, as a post script, "also, no metal".

I laughed ("haha"). The idea struck me as a good one, though, a real challenge.

So, that's what I'm up to at the moment, and you'll get the results tonight at 9pm. The Not-So-Grim Reaper Mixtape: songs about the topic of death and dying that aren't total downers (i.e. downers beyond reasonable doubt). I am pretty confident that I can keep within the limits of acceptability here, and I am passing over a whole host of really downer death songs in favour of more lighthearted or introspective tunes about the subject.

It's the dead of winter, folks. Also, we just witnessed the death of an old year. It's only week two, I'm dead tired of school, and I am absolutely dying to bring you this week's show.

'Til 9pm,

Ian

The Mixtape kicks out the jams.

Post daylight savings time darkness: check.

The cold that you are not yet used to: check.

Leaving the grocery store with a Christmas song stuck in your head. Two weeks ago: check.

Hey, congratulations on finishing that essay, but exams are staring you in the face: check.

...November: check.

Are we, perhaps, in need of a pick-me-up?

Just for you, tonight at 9pm I offer you the Mixtape's Late-Fall-End-of-Term-Twelfth-Episode-Spectacular: Rock and Roll Edition. The Rock and Roll Dump. To get your ya-ya's out. To get your arms and hearts and minds racing. All energy, all the time.

It's time for one last hurrah before exam season swallows us all. Tonight a 9pm.

The Mixtape Can’t be Satisfied

Whenever I'm lost for words, I usually rely on those of the great blues men, like Chester Burnett.

We're talking about the "B" word tonight on the Mixtape.

Until 9pm,

The Mixtape ain’t gwine to whistle Dixie (any mo’)

Because this is no time for loafing around. Not only are there essays (and essays and essays) to write, there's also this week's episode of The Mixtape to listen to. The advanced reviews are in, and critics are calling it "...explosive..." and saying that it "redefines the very concept of 'listening' in a fresh and exciting way". In fact, this week's Mixtape is the auditory equivalent of watching the trailer of Sucker Punch over and over for two hours straight. Man, that movie has everything...

Down to business: I once read on a "how to make your very own mixtape" website that you shouldn't put too many live recordings on your mix tape so as to not overwhelm the listener. It's good advice, I guess. But, we all know that I, like Justin Bieber, am a rule breaker. So that's why I'm dedicating this week's entire show to live cuts. It will be like attending the greatest concert ever performed without leaving the comfort of your own home.

And while tonight we're going to talk about all the great things that can happen musically at a live performance, I want to take this time to point out one of the bad things: audience clapping. I understand that at times it can be tasteful and warranted. That said, here are the top two worst examples of audience clapping I can find on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1LiKpv-VfE&feature=related

It reminds me of the Simpsons episode where the kids have become so disciplined (in their soulless school uniforms) that they even blink in unison.

And the winner...

"Guys! As long as we keep clapping, Dennis DeYoung keeps singing! Never stop clapping!"

It should be a blast tonight, I think.

Talk to you then,

Ian

You don’t miss the Mixtape ’til your well runs dry.

The alternate title for this blog post was "You'll Have Time (to not listen to the Mixtape when you're dead)".

I know it sounds a little dark, but it's good advice. I'm not going to be doing this forever, you know, so you might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

This week's show is all about life lessons, too, so it is truly not to be missed. Every song tonight will be brimming with good advice from people who have been around the block once or twice, possibly because they were too drunk to realize they were just going in circles.

I hope you can find some answers tonight, though, to important questions you have as you find your way through university, or, perhaps, the school of hard knocks, respectable institution that it is. Maybe you'll find out the only thing that can break your heart, according to Neil Young. Or maybe you'll get a hint about what you should try a little of, according to Otis Redding, the next time you're on a date, or something.

You're going to learn things tonight on the show. Or maybe you'll just find the inspiration to get back on the right track. We should all be so lucky.

Tune in tonight at 9pm for the life lessons Mixtape. If only just to hear William Shatner tell you about your own mortality.

The Mixtape is scared at night.

Author: The Mixtape
It is that most peculiar time of year when evil lurks under every exam sheet. On every Scantron, a secret code, unlocked only by the unlucky soul who gets every single answer wrong. At first, the sheer embarrassment of a big, fat, zero. But then...
