Production Assistants (PA)

Reports to: Production Manager

Are responsible for writing, recording and producing all submitted content for air from internal and external sources. This includes promos, ads, disclaimers, ids and psa’s. In addition this person will also be responsible for writing and brainstorming ids and promos as directed by the Production Manager. To do so, they’ll need to foster a strong understanding of both the station’s physical equipment and computer software (such as cuebase). Production assistants must possess an interest in learning the technical side of how a radio station functions, and the role is an excellent training ground for advancement within the station, as it provides some of the most crucial basic skills.This position is approximately 5-7 hours a week including a weekly meeting with your manager.

Morning show PA

The morning show Production assistant is responsible for creating all pre-recorded content and soundbites for Radio Laurier’s morning show Alive @ Nine.

Athletic Complex PA

The Athletic Complex Production assistant is responsible for creating all pre-recorded content and soundbites for the playlist provided to the athletic complex weekly, and for the representation of the athletic complex on air.


Pre-recording DJ

Reports to: Production Manager, Music and Spoken Word Coordinators

Pre-recording volunteers are required to develop, edit and produce music spotlights and discussion spotlights. You’ll need to have experience with editing software as well as good writing and communication skills to deliver engaging, informative spotlights. Pre-rec volunteers are required to complete at least one spotlight a week. Pre-rec dj’s must possess an interest in learning the technical side of how a radio station functions, and the role is an excellent training ground for advancement within the station, as it provides some of the most crucial basic skills.


Promotions Department

External Promotions coordinator

Reports to: Station, Program and Event Managers

External promotions coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the rest of the world is aware of Radio Laurier. This will entail mostly e-mail and online work or issuing press releases, receiving press releases, tweeting, facebook and making Radio Laurier present on the internet seperately from the radio laurier website. This individual needs to make a very small time commitment but must ensure daily presence.


Internal Promotions coordinator

Reports to: Station, Program and Event Managers

The internal promotions coordinator is responsible for gathering the happenings withing Radio Laurier as well as on campus. The internal promotions coordinator is responsible for seeking out communication gaps between organizations on campus and using Radio Laurier to bridge them. They will then submit all production requests to the Production Department including a written script and music and sound effect submission.

In addition they will submit a campus events calendar to the morning show each week as well as organize the making and distribution of chrismas cards for campus awareness. 

This position is responsible for indicating the PSA’s, IDs, Promos, Ads each week for Dj’s which will be done through close communication with the Production manager. This position ultimately is responsible for making sure Radio Laurier knows whats happening on campus and becomes a resource for that information.


AC Coordinator

Reports to: Station and Program Managers

The Athletic Center Coordinator is responsible for developing a playlist suitable to be played in the AC gym. The playlist is to be altered and updated on a weekly basis. You will be responsible for delivering the media and picking it up from the AC. You are also required to do an in house survey of listening trends allowing you to cater your playlist accordingly.  This position requires you to be in constant communication with the AC and submit all production requests in a timely manner to the Production Assistant responsible for AC production. The coordinator will need to be in communication with the Production Manager to incorporate all appropriate pre-recorded material. The coordinator will have the playlist approved by the music manager and station manager prior to release. This position is approximately 5-7 hours a week and it the perfect position for committed individuals who also have a passion for athletics and frequent the AC.


Graphic Artist

Reports to: Station and Event Managers

The Graphic Artist will be responsible for making all posters, ads and flyers for Radio Laurier. This will require experience in graphic design, Photoshop or InDesgin. This person will be responsible for booking ad space within WLUSP (includes cord and blueprint) and submitting them before deadlines. The Graphic Artist will be in close contact with the promotions department in order to develop ads, posters and flyers for upcoming events in a timely manner. This requires 5-7 hours a week and the ideal applicant will have a strong vision of Radio Laurier’s image.


Street Team

Reports to: Event Manager

The street team is looking for a pool of energetic, enthusiastic, and outgoing individuals to play a major role in the promotion of Radio Laurier. Regardless of how fantastic RL’s on-air product is, it will be futile if no one convinces the campus community that they ought to listen. It will be the role of the street team to brainstorm and execute a number of innovative and creative techniques for marketing the station itself, as well as the many events Radio Laurier intends to sponsor and run. Members of the street team will be asked to wear Radio Laurier swag throughout campus and provide a critical mass at the station’s events. In addition, they will help with marketing around campus through the use of posters, handouts, giveaways and whatever other methods they come up with. Some preliminary examples of events the street team will be asked to take a lead on include a "Radio Laurier Presents …" concert series, a live-to-air club night, autograph signings, artist meet and greets, Battle of the Bands, and various fundraising drives.


Advertising Assistant

Reports to: Advertising and Sponsorship Manager

Advertising assistants require a time commitment of approximately 5-7 hours a week. You would be responsible for accompanying the Advertising and Sponsorship Manager to meetings with advertisers to sell advertisements and discuss what the vision for the commercial. Upon completion of the commercial by Production Assistants you would be responsible for approving the commercial prior to sending it to the advertisers for approval. This will ensure that the advertiser will be receiving something reflective of what they asked and not just a random commercial. In addition to this you will be responsible for assisting the Advertising and Sponsorship Manager in general with their position and helping with Radio Laurier fundraiser’s.


Content Department

Music Coordinator

Reports to: Station, Program and Content Managers

Working closely with the Spoken word coordinator, the Music Coordinator will be the responsible for seeking out new, relevant music, music news and local talent. The Music Coordinator will be then distribute the content to the relevant shows based on their show outlines.This individual will be on air hosts main resource for music information and content, as well as ensureing the quality of volunteer’s music content, working closely with the content manager.

One of the major tasks of the Music Manager will be the growth and management of Radio Laurier’s digital library; they will be expected to contact (or oversee the contacting of) various major and independent record labels to ensure Radio Laurier is receiving each label’s music releases in either a physical or digital format. Whenever music does come in, the Music Manager will be responsible for reviewing it and selectively adding it to the digital library; always assuring the accsessibility and organization of the RL music database.

 The Music Coordinator is also responsible for enabling volunteers to create pre-recorded spotlights centered on music. This means seeking out and assigning spotlights to ensure certain artists, genres or bands are covered. This means working closely with both on air hosts and volunteers who create strictly pre-recorded material. The pre-rec dj’s are coordinated in conjunction with the Spoken word coordinator yet will be trained under production.

Lastly, The music coordinator is responsible for developing and preparing playlists for nights and weekends. This is to be done with the spoken word coordinator as it is to include NCRA content, pre-recorded content, music and spotlights.


Spoken Word Coordinator

Reports to: Station and Program Managers

The Spoken Word Coordinator is responsible for utilizing all programming on the NCRA site. This includes the sorting, downloading and scheduling of the content on a constant basis as new content is added daily. They will also be responsible for uploading Radio Laurier content on the NCRA website.

Once a NCRA schedule is determined, it is the spoken word coordinators responsibility to submit promo requests to production, update upcoming programming on the website and notify the promotions department. In addition to these NCRA requirements the spoken word coordinator is responsible ensureing the spoken portion of Radio Laurier’s programming is current and represented on the station,

The Spoken Word Coordinator is also responsible for enabling volunteers to create pre-recorded spotlights centered on discussions. This means seeking out and assigning spotlights to ensure certain topics are covered. This means working closely with both on air hosts and volunteers who create strictly pre-recorded material. The pre-rec dj’s are coordinatored in conjunction with the Music Coordinator yet will be trained under production.

Archivist

Reports to: Station, Online and Program Managers

This position entails an individual to sort and edit our live archives in accordance with our programming schedule. This will include putting the content in the proper format and uploading it to the site. This requires the individual to have audio editing experience as well as technical experience in transferring audio clips between computers and onto the Internet. The time commitment is approximately 5 hours and will be required over a weekend at their convenience. The upload ideally would take place at the same time so no DJ has an advantage.


Morning Show Coordinator

The Morning show coordinator is responsible for organizing the scheduling of the morning show, delegating segments, planning and organizing bi-weekly meetings with the whole team of ten people while working as a check and balance between days.The coordinator is to ensure that the morning show team is doing their best work, communicating and providing quality content at all times.

This person is responsible for developing contest guidelines, submitting all production requests in a timely manner and review continuity between shows.

In addition to these requirements the morning show producer is to be in close communication with the content manager and the programming manager to ensure that the morning show is always current and innovative.


WLUSP Coordinator

Reports to: Station,Program and Content Managers

The WLUSP coordinator is responsible for planning, hosting and facilitating a weekly cord round table. This includes input from a relevant, on campus source, a knowledgeable WLUSP source and a student body. This includes being in dialogue with all WLUSP departments to plan process for that weeks round table. The coordinator will also facilitate platforms that are internal to WLUSP. 


DJ/On-air talent/Host

Reports to: Program and Content Manager

DJs, also known as hosts, are the people that the station’s listeners interact with most directly. Whether running music or spoken word programming, they need to possess a fluid and confident speaking voice,  that is both articulate and pleasing to listen to. The ability to improvise and adapt in difficult, high stress situations in the event of technical difficulties is a major asset. In addition, a strong knowledge of the show’s topic(s) is a must, as DJs/hosts will work with their show’s producer to conduct advanced research and content planning for each show. They need to be able to speak knowledgeably in order to uphold the professional standards expected of Radio Laurier programming.

DJs will be expected to be present for their show every week, as dictated by the Content and Program Manager. In the event they’re unable to make one week due to extenuating circumstances, they are expected to make alternate arrangements to allow for a replacement to be obtained well in advance. While on-air, DJs/hosts will be expected to operate the board capably (after training) and run their show in a manner that retains Radio Laurier’s programming continuity; this includes ensuring that advertisements, station IDs, news reports, etc. are played in between the show’s content at appropriate junctures. Lastly, DJs/hosts are expected to understand and abide by the ethical standards of the station; failure to do so in a manner damaging to the station’s reputation could result in the DJ/host’s immediate dismissal.


Administrative Department

Hiring Coordinator

Reports to: Station and Program Managers

This position is responsible for determining the hiring process. The coordinator will develop applications, schedule due dates and interviews. The coordinator will then host all interviews, develop interview questions and determine alongside the station and program managers the candidates for hire. This position does require you to put more hours in during hiring times but requires minimal hours on a weekly basis.This is a great position for individuals looking to get experience in human relations and organization. 


Technical Department

Technician

Reports to: Technical Manager

Technicians, or technical assistants, will undergo initial training on the station’s equipment with the Technical Manager, until they are deemed fluent in the important aspects of the equipment. Once trained, these technicians will be called upon to aid with a host of technical concerns. Among these, they may be asked to help set up for, tear down, or oversee live events put on by Radio Laurier, be it a concert or a remote broadcast (live-to-air club night, varsity sports broadcast, etc.). In addition, they will be called upon to be present in the studio any time a DJ is going on air for their first time, or anytime a show’s live broadcast calls for technical knowledge that extends beyond a DJ/host’s basic skill set – for example, acoustic performances in studio or phone-in interviews. Lastly, when a problem crops up with the studio’s equipment and the Technical Manager is unavailable to tend to the issue, technical assistants will be contacted to rectify the issue in a timely manner.
